Yeshua, Jesus, was not looking to convert anyone. Ever. He didn’t try to convince anyone to follow himself. He simple spoke truth. And his mandate to disciple the nations was not a call to convert people to his religion, rather, to make disciples. Disciples of what? Rabbis have disciples. So he wasn’t starting a “church” as we know it today. He was telling his disciples to teach people how to live according to the commandments. Because the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
“If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. “You love me if you keep my commandments.” John 15:10
Here, Yeshua emphasizes that he has kept his Father’s commandments, and if you abide in his love (a free gift!), you will keep his commandments too.
So, the Jewish Rabbi that Christians follow as their Messiah, Yeshua, (Jesus) who takes away the sins of the world, lived by and taught the Torah to his disciples, commanded them to make disciples and to keep his commandments.
If anything, Yeshua sent the crowds who were following him away! John 6. He said things that was hard for them to grasp. When the rich young ruler came, he sent him away telling him to sell all his possessions and give them to the poor.
Side note - Not to sell them to support his ministry, so that God can use him better through money! He didn't need money because he wasn't interested in building structures, rather he was growing people in the garden of life.
