Idolotry

Idolotry

Simply put, idolotry is lifting any idea equal or higher than God. It can be anything. Eating healthy, or getting in shape, reading the Bible, knowledge, education, money, job, singing songs, music, worship, church meetings, my phone, myself?. What do you think about all the time? What drives you? WHO are you trying to impress? Your friends? Whoever is in the room with you? Are you seeking to be liked? Are you looking to be lifted up? Success, power, money, control, beliefs, pleasure.. these things can all be idols. Yes. Even singing songs to Jesus can be (and often is) idolotry.

Let me explain that last statement. If I, in my heart, elevate a song, a desire to sing or play an instrument, or to be seen singing or playing, or to have an experience with God higher than God, that is idolotry. Also, music is not worship. It is not even really an expression of worship. Worship means to bow down. It is an act of submission. Dying to self. Complete obedience. The Bible does not connect music to worship – ever. Praise, Yes. I am not saying to stop singing, but rather to look my own heart in ALL I do.

I remember thinking that I would never be stupid enough to worship a golden calf like the Hebrews at Mt Sinai. But I am the same. I bow to my emotions. I allow my feelings to lead me. Who I give power to, I submit to, I treat as my master. My master, my Lord, the one who commands me, to whom I give my allegiance, I give my obedience. Is it myself?

Abba, search my heart. I want you to be the one I follow and obey. I want to keep your commands only. To do ONLY what I see You doing, just as Yeshua did only what he saw you doing! I want to be one with you. Not living for myself.

Help me to come out from delusion, to walk in humility, to give my full heart to you. To trust that you are GOOD.
